Gismalla Abdalla Rassas (1932–2013) was a South Sudanese military officer and politician who served as the President of the High Executive Council of the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region from 5 October 1981 to 23 June 1982. He led the region's interim government during a politically turbulent period preceding the abolition of Southern Sudan's autonomy under President Jaafar Nimeiri. Early life and military career Gismalla Abdalla Rassas was born in 1932 in the Western Bahr el Ghazal region of present-day South Sudan. His government's main task was to oversee the region while preparations were made for new elections amid fierce debate over Nimeiri's proposal to divide Southern Sudan into three regions. Rassas served as President of the High Executive Council until 23 June 1982, when Joseph James Tombura succeeded him following regional elections. His administration lasted less than a year but came during one of the most consequential periods in Southern Sudan's political history, shortly before the Addis Ababa Agreement was dismantled in 1983, leading to the outbreak of the Second Sudanese Civil War. Later public service After leaving office, Rassas continued to serve Sudan in diplomatic roles, including as an ambassador. Following South Sudan's independence in 2011, he served in the country's Council of States, representing his region until his death. Death and legacy Gismalla Abdalla Rassas died in May 2013 in Khartoum after a prolonged illness at the age of 81. The Government of South Sudan accorded him a state funeral, and tributes from political leaders described him as an honest soldier, patriot, and respected national figure who had served his country during a difficult period in its history.
