In the mid-1600s, microscopes were still a relatively new invention. Robert Hooke, an English scientist, built and used one of the improved early versions. The lenses were not very powerful compared to modern ones, but good enough to reveal details of the micro-world that nobody in human history had seen before. . Among the things Hooke examined under the microscope was a slice of cork. He noticed a repeating pattern of tiny, chamber-like spaces. They reminded him of the small rooms where monks lived, so he called them “cells.” . Hooke recorded his observations in a book called Micrographia, published in 1665. The book included amazingly beautiful illustrations of cork as well as lots of other things such as fleas, poppy seeds, flies… This publication became a scientific landmark. Hooke’s book became a bestseller and made microscopy a subject of fascination. Just imagine people realizing that an entirely new world of patterns and details was hidden just beyond what the naked eye could see. . What Hooke actually saw in cork were the empty cell walls of dead tissue from the cork oak (Quercus suber). Even though he wasn’t looking at living structures, his work began a line of thought that eventually led to cell theory (the idea that all living organisms are made of cells). In case you didn’t realize, the cell theory is one of the fundamental pillars of modern biology. . Microscopy is fascinating, and an incredibly important tool in biological research! . For this video I used an Olympus BX41 microscope at up to 400X magnification. #microscopy #microscope #cork #apbiology #drbioforever
