Shoutout to Black American’s for creating mutual aid and cooperative systems as early as the 18th century. Black Owned communities created mutual aid societies to provide insurance, healthcare, burial services, and financial assistance when excluded from white-run institutions. Black farmers created cooperatives for economic power during
Reconstruction and the Jim Crow era. HBCU’s were founded after the civil war to higher education, leadership training and professional development. Black church networks/spiritual traditions created in the 1800’s that helped maintain identity, practices and spirituals/gospel music. Hence the preservation of “Come by Yah”. Advocacy organizations and freedom of movement infrastructures that were pivotal during the civil rights movement for sit ins, marches, boycotts, voting rights and equity. Black Wall Street, Black Owned banks and credit unions, Independent Black Media for cultural expression, storytelling, and identity.

Black Americans have given the world the filament light bulb, 2G technology, the gas mask, traffic light, blood banks, GPS technology, and more. In fact, Black Americans hold patents for over 100,000 inventions. More importantly, Black Americans fought and died to get the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Fair Housing Act of 1968. And the Black American Civil Rights movement greatly influenced the passage of the Immigration Act of 1965, which opened the doors for immigrants of color.
