The CDL skills test and driving test can only be given in English and the use of an interpreter is not allowed.

i get why they did it.. butnyea you are right most of us that drive trucks do it so we dont have to converse with other people a lot🤣🤣. I'm fine if they come oit and just say it, we want those jobs here kept for US Citizens only so that they cant use the "driver shortage" as a way to import drivers. Arkansas by itself cannot fix the actual problem with trucking which is that we are Overtime Exempt!

Wouldn’t that be discrimatory against a deaf person holding a CDL then? Assuming difficulty conversing with the average citizen .. as the average citizen does not know sign language (primary language for the deaf person?).. they could resort to writing for the average citizen — but that’s no different than someone whose main language is Spanish, using an app to translate.

John, this should have been enforced many years ago. I could go on for hours about why this is a good thing. Maybe we can meet at Millwood for a days fish to discuss. Have a great day.

As someone who works in the modern trucking industry I can attest that this law is absolutely necessary. I cannot disagree with your commentary regarding conversing with the general public, but we shouldn’t gloss over the need for language proficient drivers. The industry is filled with bad actors who bring in drivers from underserved countries to drive with minimal training/supervision and subsequently underpaying them. Yes English proficiency was already a requirement, but that doesn’t negate Obama’s memo that pushed for no enforcement of the policy. That’s an important detail that should not be glossed over and there is SMS data that supports the narrative of unsafer roads since that policy took effect. The next federal crack down for trucking will be on states considered CDL mills. Maybe not the best execution for Arkansas, but English speaking proficiency is absolutely necessary after what I’ve seen in my career.
