@thatgirlindebt: Replying to @JF63622 “acted irresponsibly with my overdraft” sounds weird but I didn’t know how else to word it 🤣🤣 #debt #debtfree #creditcarddebt #overspending

I think people see “HSBC refunded me” as “HSBC gave me free money” but it’s a refund of interest and charges, not on any money you have borrowed.

The fact the ombudsman agreed it was wrong and you should be refunded says it all! HSBC are in the wrong here and not you.

I love how you have documented this claim. We act like our relationship with finance is one sided. It is two-sided! Big financial institutions are run by real people, making real policies, if not individual decisions, too. Like any relationship, there are loads of factors impacting how both sides act. ALL the responsibility does not fall on the individual, just like in a toxic relationship, it isn't always the victim!

People forget the entire banking system is designed this way so people make them rich and sometimes it takes people a while to realise and correct it. Many don’t they stay in the trap.

This sort of attitude makes no sense! Do they not realise the banks are unethically profiting from interest charges? Higher credit usage = higher interest = more profit. By extending credit to someone already in debt (and unlikely to be able afford to pay it off in a reasonable time frame), they are preying on someone who is financially vulnerable to make more profit! 😤

I'm glad they've refunded you, and they definitely should. However playing devil's advocate here- I never used overdraft, or have been in debt, and there's been times when I've really struggled and wish I did go into my overdraft if I knew that down the line it would just been cancelled/refunded. There's a strange unfairness which I think people see. It's not on the side of the banks, it's on the side of "I've been responsible, you weren't, and it seems like you've won". Obviously there's so much of a bigger picture, and I'm honestly really happy for you and I do not think the banks should ever lend irresponsibly, just trying to understand the other side also ❤️

The commenters are missing the point (either purposely or naively) AFFORDABILITY COMPLAINTS are to highlight irresponsible lending from the financial institution lending credit. If the lender had followed financial regulation & law, there would be no affordability complaints!! 🤦🏼‍♀️

I think there are lots of different sides to this issue. Banks shouldn’t lend irresponsibly, people shouldn’t spend irresponsibly. Interest rates are shockingly high but they’re no surprise. I am genuinelyynot unsympathetic but I can see both sides. banks in general are profiting shamelessly from the credit culture that they have helped create. But they are not forcing us to spend money we don’t have. It’s just my opinion. All that said, you are a wonderful advocate for digging deep and getting out of a very large hole 👍

Don’t listen to the haters. Excessive bank charges are legalized theft full stop and so they should pay back the excessive charges. A fair charge is different but these banks are making massive profits on the back of vilnerable people s as if it’s shameful. They trap people into a cycle of poverty and hoplessness

I don’t understand how anyone thinks you’re not taking responsibility? You’ve paid off £21,000, the bank aren’t giving you back money that you spent, they’re giving back the profit that they made from their irresponsible lending?

People’s response is so multi faceted though - sometimes it’s just bitterness from them because they don’t think you should have borrowed it in the first place, or that they borrowed it and their claim was declined. There are also a minority who work for the bank who actually do want to defend the banks. And some who never borrowed and did without but feel everyone who did borrows is getting money back eg ppi/car finance/irresponsible lending etc. Lastly, you’re taking responsibility now and making the repayments because you’ve changed. Your borrowing was still irresponsible by you, at the time, often people have an issue letting you move in, acknowledging that you can have been silly in the past but recognise it and make the changes. Well done!!
