I cut my own hair for this reason. I do a butterfly cut for layers and point cut the ends, then I put all of my hair under my chin into a ponytail (like a beard) and cut additional length for the straggly pieces. This creates a U shape and it works pretty well in my experience

I’m sure it’s really difficult with the language barrier. Unfortunately, that haircut is botched either way. The pictures make it look like there is very little left on the ends in certain areas.. if that’s not the case, I would ask a stylist to just blend the top layer out and remove some weight to make it softer. So sorry you had this experience!

Hi! I’m a hairstylist & cosmetology teacher! This is simply just a bad haircut. My recommendation to ask for to get what you’re looking for is “keep the length, long layers, and texturize through the top.” Research great stylists in your area and once you find one that does it how you like it, stay forever!! If you find someone that gets close, stay with them and tweak it each time until it’s something you love! My advice to fix this if you want to do so at home would be to split it down the middle and pull everything forward. Start with one side, pull it all forward, and soften any harsh lines. Repeat. Then, separate the two halves into front and back. For the back sides, pull everything up and trim off the awkward length at the top. For the front sides, pull everything like you’re making a unicorn horn. Cut off awkward length at the front/top. I hope this is helpful! Watch a butterfly cut tutorial by a hairstylist to guide you if you need!!

Since you don’t want that top layer shorter, have them texturize it! That way it’s not so heavy and blends a lot better. You have great hair. It’s just thick and needs to be tailored to you

Those top layers are going to have to be a little bit shorter to make it flow. Thank goodness your hair is so thick it’s salvageable.

Everytime I go to salons they mess up my hair. I also have super think hair with different textures. Honestly, I'd take some thinning shears to the top layer just a little at a time, of course.

Hairstylist here, first of all, bad layers, she did not know what she was doing. Best advice, when you see someone with long layers that you like, ask who she goes to. You need someone with experience with long layers.

I’ve been cutting my own hair for over a decade. I use proper hair scissors, thinning sheers, and a hair razor. I for my current long layers I start with the Brad mondo method (keeping it longer than I want) then blending together with thinning sheers and razors.
