The 1–5 dial in a fridge is the temperature control setting. It doesn’t usually show the exact temperature in °C or °F, but instead gives you a relative scale:
• 1 = Warmest setting (compressor runs the least, fridge is not very cold)
• 5 = Coldest setting (compressor runs the most, fridge is very cold)
So:
• If your fridge is too warm and food isn’t staying fresh, turn it up (toward 5).
• If your fridge is too cold (e.g., drinks freezing, ice forming), turn it down (toward 1).
🔹 The middle setting (around 3) is usually the manufacturer’s recommended “normal” setting that keeps the fridge at about 3–5°C (37–41°F), which is safe for food storage.

Why couldn’t they just draw a picture of the season on the dial instead of numbers people could make the assumption of what the dial is without even reading the directions

On a cheap freezer with a dial labeled 1–5, the numbers almost always represent temperature settings—but not in actual °C/°F. Instead, they’re just power levels for the cooling system:
1 = Warmest setting (least cooling)
5 = Coldest setting (most cooling)
So turning the dial up makes the freezer work harder and get colder.
Most manufacturers recommend starting in the middle (3), then adjusting based on how frozen your food feels or if you notice frost buildup.
