Distance IS the issue. There can’t be nonstops from Addis Ababa to the States because of its altitude, a plane can’t make it nonstop. Most flights stop in Rome. But IAD and EWR stop in Togo both ways because Ethiopian Airline’s subsidiary, ASKY, has a hub there so there is more connectivity.

The framing here isn’t entirely accurate. The China and Uzbekistan examples are mainly their national airline flying to NYC/LA for prestige, not a US airline choosing the destination. A better example would be like the Delta flight to Dakar, Senegal.

Thought a lot of this was due to FAA rules. At least for Thailand and some other developing countries, where the FAA didn’t give them the top rating, making directs challenging. Heard directs to Thailand are coming back though

Bali is mainly a European destination. Also not a lot of Indonesian live in America they live in Netherlands where they have colonial ties.

Routes like lax to dxb or lax to changi aren’t operated by us carries but by emirates only for dxb lax and lax changi is operated by Singapore airlines only maybe us airlines aren’t willing to cross that much distance lots of routes between America and other countries aren’t operated by a single us aircraft carrier

There’s no flights between Indonesia and the UK either which is bizarre because the UK government has wanted flights to Indinesia from the 1970s. I read it in an FCDO document from the 70s.

tbf that Togo flight is for Ethiopian airlines to refuel it's not some US-Togo pipeline or something. I think you can buy tickets to IAD to Togo but they're much more expensive for that leg, it's really for people flying to Ethiopia or connecting via Ethiopian Airlines

This isn’t exactly true. Flight to Togo tie in with Ethiopian Airlines being unable to fly full loaded out of ADD due to altitude. So they make stops on the way. Togo is good for them as they have Asky based there a sister airline so can get connections to other parts of Western Africa which is good for US business due to the oil and gas industries in the area and dispora populations as well. Though Thailand and Indonesia are popular destinations it’s mainly leisure traffic and that’s does not yield as well on very long haul routes. United to operate to Thailand but it’s via HKG which makes much more financial than a direct route.

Tourist numbers aren’t everything. You need to factor in business demand. Guyana has a ton of recently discovered off shore oil and a large diaspora population in the US.

I’ve taken this exact flight from Togo to DC not that many people got on in Togo the boarding area was quite empty lol it’s really just a refuelling stop for the Addis flight
