@theformulamom: “What water should I use to mix my formula?” I hear this question A LOT and I get it! It’s confusing— largely because the recommendations vary based on which agency you’re citing (the AAP, the WHO, or the CDC). While I typically defer to the American Academy of Pediatrics, which indicates that tap water is fine for most babies (provided your little was full-term, isn’t immunocompromised, and that your water is safe to drink), I know some families prefer NOT to use tap water. In that case, what’s best? Regular distilled water. Just the store-brand gallons from the grocery store! Why distilled and not purified water? Distilled water has both contaminants AND minerals removed— purified and spring water leaves the minerals in and/or adds them in. While extra minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium are fine for adults, babies don’t need them! Formula is nutritionally-complete and contains all the micronutrients that a baby needs from 0-12 months. Purified water and spring water is safe to use, but distilled is preferred when available. Why not use nursery water? First, it’s expensive— and you don’t need to pay more for marketing! Second, many varieties have added fluoride, which babies under 6 months do not need, and babies over 6 months can receive by offering tap water with meals. *If your baby will not be offered fluoridated tap water when starting solids, please discuss with your pediatrician about whether additional sources of fluoride should be considered.
