A lot of misinformation has been spread but the creators confirmed Betty Boop was based on Helen Kane and other women like Mae Questel and Margie Hines. The studio themselves brought up Esther Jones name to disprove Helen’s act was original but a a lot of the evidence also predated Esther. A lot of Betty’s mannerisms weren’t even created by Helen it was thanks to Mae Questel and Little Ann Little that we got Betty’s singing style. It’s also important to note that Betty is a heavily sexualized character and Esther Jones was only about 12 years old when she was performing and Helen Kane was already in her 20s.
