Stagnant is a great word for San Diego and not inherently a bad thing. Born & raised and absolutely love it here, but longing for something new. Also, the conservatism definitely comes from the transplants ala the military and such.

I love San Diego but after 3 years I am itching to leave. It’s too slow for me and it’s still so lacking in arts and culture for me. I’ve lived in much smaller towns that had more vibrant and creative arts and theater scenes and I think that comes from the homogeneity of the city. It feels like there is a very specific aesthetic mold that most residents are trying to embody and that hamstrings the art community because if you don’t cater to that specific market you are going to have a hard time making money and surviving as an artist.

As someone who moved to the PNW, I didn’t realize how medium paced SD was until I moved to a slower pace like Portland. SD isn’t there quite yet in comparison to LA/NYC, and I don’t think it needs to be. SD needs to find its own identity aside from being the third sibling of SoCal lolol

Yess this describes it perfectly. And the weather doesn’t help. Having the same weather all year round and very little economic change / hustle makes it feel extra stagnant like a repeating movie or something lol. I still love it though !

I love San Diego as a Riverside transplant (big surprise 😭😅). I’ve mostly lived in the less humongous areas and it’s fantastic. I’m now much more north than I’ve ever been and it’s…. Too quiet lol it’s all slower here but damn you definitely speak the truth about only being able to go so far here

I moved to SD in 2011. the way this city has exploded since then is crazy. it'll always be chill vibes. but now it comes at a cost. a steep cost. honestly I wish it would cool down a bit. its becoming unaffordable and overly commercialized.

Just as a FYI- most of SD County votes blue. The entire City Council are Dems and the County of Supervisors is more blue than red. East County tends to be more red.
