that's totally avoidable. dont they have confined space permits? here in Australia you need to complete a permit to enter spaced and ensure you have done a risk assessment. they should have been wearing masks.

OSHA has pretty specific guidelines on confined space access. Those poor souls who rushed in to assist their coworker acted out of an emotional response rather than a rational one.

tired but still trouble :
Why make a manure pit underground? Seems extra dangerous but also can't say I know much about manure pits.

My cousin died in around 2010 in a molasses accident when he fell in a tank and also died from some kind of fumes. He was in his mid-20s. I would be curious if this was a same type of gas that killed these men. My heart goes out to his families. ❤️

Are we sure it was an accident? Not to sound morbid but those valves arent easily "accidentally" knocked into and he did make sure he was by himself and said he was just finishing up something so no one would suspect anything

Groups of confined space fatalities are not unusual, unfortunately, bc there is often one victim and then several attempted rescuers. Unlike manufacturing sites with training & safety professionals, farms tend to be family run and smaller. I doubt those workers were trained in confined spaces and safe rescues. They were just trying to rescue their friend.

First rule taught in Farm Rescue training, do not go into a pit unless you have a SCBA, self contained breathing apparatus, because this has happened too many times

We take safety classes for H2S all the time in the oilfield. Rule #1 is don’t attempt rescue if you’re not trained to do so and have the proper equipment.

Just devastating. A few years ago a farm lost 3 brothers to a similar accident.
