@thekoreanvegan: The past year has provided to me a sometimes challenging lesson on how far this world still needs to come to recognize the autonomy of women. There are some men who still believe, fundamentally, that a woman’s worth is only what a man will give it. As I have revealed more about who I am, my long career in law, my second marriage, my childlessness, and my shameless pursuit of marriage equality, I have received more attacks on my particular brand of womanhood than I have ever received in recent memory. Many men have called me things I won’t repeat here. And yes, not all men, but enough of them to make me think we aren’t as “progressive” as I once thought. As the founder of a K-Beauty brand—I need to acknowledge that k-beauty is an industry built, in part, on toxic beauty standards surrounding aging and anti-blackness. I never want to be thought of as someone who fosters FEAR of aging or buys into the hype around “whitening” my skin (which is, as you can see, naturally darker than the average k-pop idol’s). I want to make sure that the messaging and vision of @koreanveganbeauty remain crystal clear: we are about inclusion. At its core, I wanted to build a company that makes space for compassion—compassion for the animals, compassion for the planet, and of course, compassion for OURSELVES!! The philosophy of K-beauty SHOULD always start with what the evil sorceress in Snow White had to learn the hard way: Inner beauty is the most powerful beauty of them all. Anytime I get “nervous” about my aging face, I think about the beautiful words of William Yeats: “One man loved the pilgrim soul in you, / And loved the sorrows of your changing face.” I am lucky to have such a man in life, but the greater challenge has always been laid out to me as this: “The hardest thing you’ll ever do is to learn to love yourself.” #kbeauty #koraenveganbeauty #selflove
