It’s the only one of his books I didn’t really love like it was easy to read but it was a bit too much if that makes sense every second chapter another disaster and narrow escape, rinse and repeat, I really enjoyed the characters though and would be interested to see where he takes it in the next book hopefully the pacing evens out though

I personally disagree with the opinion that “it's a book designed to be adapted to the big screen” I don't see it that way at all. It's Abercrombie refusing to stay in his comfort zone and deciding to create something with his own identity instead of just copying what he did with The First Law.

I listened to the audiobook. Somehow it doesn’t hit the same way as the First Law books (I’m currently listening to the excellent Best Served Cold). I’m not entirely sure why. Maybe the characters were too cartoony? There were also a few too many main characters, which meant we didn’t get to hang out with each of them enough (especially Baptiste didn’t get enough screen time)

I’ve never been able to read Abercrombie, fantastic author and I keep trying, but something about his writing annoyingly doesn’t click with me. The devils was the first book that I really enjoyed, great cast of characters that admittedly carried the story.

It was my first Abercrombie back in June. Loved it but farts make me laugh so… immediately read first law after which I also thoroughly enjoyed

I love how books can feel so different depending on who’s reading it . I really enjoyed it , but I can see why someone may not.

I did. I found it very derivative. Nothing was especially novel. It's like he took mostbof his ideas from relatively recent grim dark novels plus a bit of medieval history.

you should check out The Witch and the Woodcutter: A grimdark fantasy that centres around a reluctant hero who has to escort a condemned witch back to her homeland, all while being hunted by the Inquisitors who want her dead. It's also a great dissection of how women are often portrayed in fantasy and how religion and culture can culminate in violence towards women
