@careercoachtammie: Replying to @bettyblue143 100s of people are applying to all jobs. It's a tough job market and people should be applying to government jobs. #governmentjobs #jobsaustralia

It is soooo unbelievably hard to get fired from a government job.
Ive seen technicians and nurses get into fist fights and just get moved to a different section of the hospital.
Any private job you are gone.

Higher level government jobs definitely prefer internal hires (even if they advertise publicly) but a great way to get into gov jobs is via contracts. There are SO many short term positions (3-6 months), mostly in state not federal, and it’s a good way to get in

Remember a friend leaving her private teaching job for a government teaching job, I asked why and she said, “they were planning to have a baby”

Tammie, in my experience it's not that the government only wants 'government experience', it's just the way government networking is, especially in Canberra, and the recruitment game is stitched up as senior management generally want to control who is entering the door so there are no culture shocks and the environment is controlled. I've witnessed lies in recruitment panels where even though candidates are extremely qualified for a role, due to a political decision, the head of the panel has written notes such as 'had difficulty maintaining eye contact' or 'spoke too quietly' to mark them down in case of an audit which was in this case factually incorrect and just becomes a 'he said she said argument' that the applicant won't bother appealing.
