Gerald Levert finished writing a book with his father on the ninth of November, 2006. He died in his sleep the next morning at his home outside Cleveland. The book was called I Got Your Back. He was forty years old. He would have been sixty today. His cousin was the one who came to wake him at the home in Newbury, Ohio, and could not. The autopsy took three months to come back. When it did, it named pneumonia in his lungs and a fatal mix in his blood of Vicodin, Percocet, Darvocet, Xanax, and two over-the-counter allergy pills. Acute intoxication. Ruled an accident. He had been on the medications for a shoulder that would not stop hurting and for the aftermath of 2005 surgery to repair a severed Achilles tendon. Gerald Edward Levert was born on July 13, 1966, in Canton, Ohio, to Eddie and Martha Levert. The family moved to Shaker Heights while he was small. That is where he came up watching his father leave for the O'Jays tour and come back off it, and leave again. He wanted the same road. Five albums with the trio, four of them gold or platinum, including Baby I'm Ready, Just Coolin', and Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop Goes My Mind. Then he went solo, in 1991, with Private Line. On his solo debut, Eddie stepped onto the record to sing a duet with his son called "Baby Hold On To Me." The song went to number one on the R&B chart in January 1992. The son had put the father on his own record. They went out on the road together after that. They called it the Father and Son Tour. The shows were the thing people talked about the longest.He tossed teddy bears into the crowd. His fans, mostly women, mostly Black women, called him G-Bear. He sang the old way. Not the cool, distant way R&B started to go in the 2000s. In his year 2000 song "Mr. Too Damn Good," he sang: "Baby, I'll open doors for you any time, because that's what a man's supposed to do." He meant it. His whole catalogue meant it. Nine solo albums by the end. He also became one of the go-to writers and producers for other people, putting songs on projects for Patti LaBelle, Teddy Pendergrass, Barry White, Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills, and James Ingram. In 1997 he formed LSG with Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill, and that one went platinum too. Eddie remembered going in there for a rehearsal in February of 2006, for a Father and Son concert. The band started up "Family Reunion." Gerald hit a riff, turned to his father, and said, "Man, that's one of those riffs we used to do up in church down south!" Eddie gave him a pound. By the time of that rehearsal Gerald was worn down. The shoulder had been aching for months, and the Achilles had never fully healed since the surgery. He was living with chronic pain. He took Xanax on top of the pain medications, for the anxiety that came with all of it. The pneumonia set in that fall, and he kept moving. His last studio album, In My Songs, was already done by then. It would come out three months after he was buried. The book was closing too. In it, before he shut the cover, Gerald wrote openly about his kids. "My son Lemicah and my daughter Carlysia are about to graduate from high school," he said. "So I have to look at things differently now than I would've two or three years ago." Two or three years ago, he wrote, he would have told them if you ain't talking about making money, I don't want to hear it. Now, he said, it was bigger than that. It was about helping them get on the right track, and stay on it. Then the book was done. That was the ninth of November, 2006. Fifteen months later, at the fiftieth Grammy Awards, Gerald won Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for "In My Songs."
