@thedominiquemorgan: at school starts back many parents are figuring out how to make sure their children are safe, especially online. @lalathemessenger I watched your video and I wanted to offer some feedback as an expert and as someone who has done this work with young people and families for over a decade.

The fact that she showed her black child’s face is so infuriating!! Children cannot even make mistakes in relative privacy these days and the fact that she (like many) cannot parent offline is beyond me. The absence or wilful ignorance of common sense is bewildering!!

I was one of the 1st dozen to see her post. I reached out to the officer on the report. the school she attends has been informed so they can monitor possible harrassment from her peers, they police are looking into the situation and cps has opened a case.

I don’t even believe that anyone child (under 18) should have access to their own smartphones. Give the kids feature phones, they don’t need internet access, just a way to call friends and family

As a former teacher I always try to stress the importance of explaining the WHY behind everything. A lot of parents feel like they shouldn’t “have to explain themselves” to a child but if you don’t explain the why they won’t understand the importance 😩

All of this! We can’t berate our kids about peer pressure, when we pressure them in every other part of their lives. Telling them to fly on demand when we never taught them how to flap their wings. I teach my son that no is a full sentence, even if it means saying no to me.

I feel like a lot of the adults in the comments are missing the point I’m 17 and just graduated high school and I’m now a college student but when I started high school I had restrictions on my phone and all the stuff to prevent me from doing and sending certain videos to different boys and stuff but it didn’t stop me if I’m honest most kids only do things because other kids their age are doing the same I think the only solution is to have a sit down conversation with them about why it’s not good to do those kinds of things but like Dominic said if a kid doesn’t have the same values as you it won’t matter what you do to try to stop them from doing it they are gonna find a way to do it because I used to find ways

I think we as adults forget what being a preteen/teen and young adult was like. Conversations about discernment starts with they’re small but then it evolves. Teaching little moments roll into bigger ones. Asking them how you felt in moments and guiding them to make safe decisions. Safe decision aren’t always the ones we would make for them or ourselves. Being a person your kid can talk to. With the internet segg talks are more in-depth.

The average parent looks at their child like a possession and not an autonomous human being. A human being that needs love, nurturing and space to come into THEIR own and not to become a non-thinking, carbon copy of you.

This is the closest I have heard us get to understanding children’s activities around stimulation in this category. This conversation is so necessary. DO NOT BLAME THE KIDS. Understand why they did it.
