I “invented” a ski pole when i was a kid 1992 had an injection mold made cost me $27,000 unfortunately that was before the internet so patent research took a long time, turns out it was already invented I had my product sold but the guy wouldn’t share the patent so we all lost and I have a worthless mold

One thing I learned recently, is CNC machines are a lot cheaper than I had previously thought. You can purchase small scale cnc machines and produce a lot of practical tooling and parts with one.

isn't a huge reason the cost came down is you can prototype a mold with a 3D printer? obviously that's not going to necessarily be high grade

Worked in injection molding and extruded plastic on and off for a decade along with having a father that was a manual machinist in a plastics factory in the usa: The cost to do small tchotchke style items is dropped so much that most of the companies to just stop doing it.

This is great. Also, where did you learn the word tchotchke? I have known it all my life (oregon) and so many pnw people don’t use it…

The only gap I see is sourcing the plastic itself. Seems like MOQs and logistical costs need to come down before it can have an effect on unit cost.

my library has a mini- CNC machine that you can use to machine out your own molds.

Ive been doing it at home using resin 3d printer and casting it in aluminum to produce the mold. I can even make metal parts if i cast the mold in iron and inject aluminum.

I have designed and 3d printed many parts for RC vehicles.. Injection molding wouod have been very cool and stronger for sure for the parts that need the added strength. Fun stuff sir.

What’s the largest size you can inject at home? Is there a way to make small blow molds ?

Last time I'd got a quote for a mold for a 7-piece set of polyhedral dice, it was $50-100k.

Zero marginal cost reaps trillions for manufacturers, and is accelerating. Automation is just about here. Yet technocrats scheme for a future where we are trapped working for them, until 💀.....
And people are clueless and apathetic.
