Producer Rick Beato has amassed over 5 million loyal followers on his YouTube channel where he provides breakdowns and commentary on music, as well as interviews with artists. Now, in a new video, he reveals he’s at risk of losing his entire channel due to YouTube’s copyright policies…and he’s not the only one battling this. For those unaware, when content creators use copyrighted music in their videos, even for a few seconds, a record label can submit a copyright ID claim and take all the revenue that the video has made. Even if it falls under the “Fair Use” classification, which allows you to use copyrighted content if it is for the purpose of commentary, criticism, news reporting, etc. In more extreme cases, as in the case with Beato, you can be at risk for losing your entire channel. Beato explains in his video (that you should absolutely watch) that he currently has three claims against him from Universal Music Group and if he doesn’t fight them (and win) there will be three strikes on his channel and he will have his ENTIRE channel removed. “I’m doing interviews with people and playing the music that they either wrote or recorded, or they produced,” Beato explains. “You need to play people's music to talk about it. That is the definition of fair use. These are interviews with people about their careers. Why are these record labels wanting to take down content about artist that have records on their label? What sense does that make?” This is not the first time Beato has raised the issue on his channel and has rallied support from other creators and musicians. Many shared their similar experience including Anthony Fantano, Justin Hawkins, Jared Dines, El Estepario Siberiano, Professor of Rock and more. I’ve even encountered this problem myself on my small channel. In the most recent video, Beato’s main gripe is with Universal Music Group claiming his content, but they are not the only label making the ridiculous copyright claims. The issue is also not just limited to YouTube, but it’s a frequent problem across the other big social media platforms as well. Even though it is the labels that are making the claims, it’s an issue that YouTube needs to fix. I’m sure there’s people that will say “I don’t care if content creators make money, get a real job, blah blah” but you might feel differently when YOUR favorite content creator disappears. Aaaaanyway, go watch Rick Beato’s full video for the whole story. #rock #metal #metalcore #numetal
