“Lifeless wasteland” but there’s chorus fruit, plants, endermen who live there, literal cities and a flying ship with living storage (shulckers). It may be limited in mobs and features compared to the old nether but that doesn’t mean the end update should be an underwhelming clone of the pale garden.

people disagreeing as if you're not completely correct, a end update thats just nether update 2 would be stale and boring and would remove any kind of individuality that the end has, adding ores and trees are so redundant its insane how people even consider it a good idea

The End isn't a wasteland, I feel like what Mojang is more accurately going for was abandoned. Abandoned cities and structures. I feel the way to go is to add more structures like Chorus farms, empty animal pens, abandoned outposts, that all lead to nearby cities. Adding new Chorus plants to overtake them, and non-enderman mobs to infest them would also help. Really hit the feeling of people used to live here, and now they're long gone.

It needs to keep an empty feeling. Any new structures needs to be spaced out. I'd add ruins of overworld/ nether structures to the overworld as if they slipped into the void. I'd add ruins that's you have to dig down in the island that would be a temple trading hub for Enderman. You would place your offering, turn around and wait for the endermam to switch them. I'd add a new ancient seed that the sniffer could dig up in the overworld. When brought and planted in the end causes a new grass to spread out on the islands, allowing chorus plants to grow differently. Eventually the new grass spreads far enough to restore an old biome where a new mob can spawn.

The only biome before the nether update was literaly called nether wastes and the mobs that lived there were either undead, lava based creatures, hellish fire breathing ghasts or endermen that can teleport. The nether was a wasteland😭

in DND terms the nether should feel like the 9 hells, a diverse hellscape of actively hostile creatures, teeming with life but not good for yours. just don't fall. the end feels like the shadowfell, a barren and alien wasteland devoid of life but show eerie signs of past life, any life are passively hostile, and you're more likely to die from hunger or going out of bounds. so just don't fall.

Maybe we don’t need an end update, perhaps a new dimension? I’m curious to see what the ancient city portal leads to. I wonder what happened to the ancient builders who crossed that portal and got stuck there
