I’m brown and I took a dna test that showed I have 54% Native to the americas. I’m glad that the census allows us to put that down now. I hate having to put “white”.

Im a brown Mexican that always checked “white.” Although I knew that I had indigenous blood I always avoided checking American-indian because I thought it only applied to tribes within the US borders. Im happy to see that I can check native without guilt now.

Be careful. You are not “legally” American Indian. You are “statistically” American Indian. This is a policy change for statistics. It is not a reclassification or change of 25 USC 1603. American Indian in this sense, is not an ethnic group it is a political group, I.e tribes are sovereigns that determine their own political citizens. (Now this is not to diminish someone’s indigeneity, border are imaginary and colonization still sucks, however there is an important distinction to be made) There is a whole branch of Law and Policy relying on the 25 USC 1603 definition which this policy change in this video does not affect. For example, ICWA will not apply, IGRA, IHS status, all that stuff will not be affected.
