How to do a proper taper for an Ironman 70.3👇 ▶️ Starting around 14 days out you should be slightly lowering your volume by 30-40%. Race week it should be a 50-60% drop. Keep intensity relative to volume (shorter reps like 30-90 second race pace efforts with longer recovery) ▶️ Starting two days out you should be carb loading between 8-12g per kg of your body weight each day. Focus on high glycemic carbs aka low fiber (sports drinks, rice, honey, syrup, etc.) ▶️ Always check out the transition area and bike/run course if possible. Ideally you can get a practice swim in the water the day before race day and a ride/run for an easy shakeout (20-30 minutes) before dropping off your bike ▶️ After you check in you should start to get everything organized so that race morning you minimize as much “thinking” as possible. Get your bottles ready, lay out your bags, go over your race plan. Triple check everything. ▶️ You won’t get a lot of sleep the night before the race so the days leading up to it are the days you want to be well rested with quality sleep. Now is not the time to be doing anything to risk injury / illness. 🔑 Tapering isn’t about shutting the body down and resting the whole time. It’s about doing just enough to stay sharp and ready to race, while letting the body absorb the training and reach peak performance.
