An English linguistic on Youtube stated that it was a northern French dialect that moved to England. This northern French dialect (Normandy) was influenced SOMEWHAT by the language of the Viking's Norse language which was a distant offshoot of the northern German language branch. The linguistic mapped out the movement of the northern Germanic language up to Norway (2°) and then on to northern France (3°). I found it interesting but not sure if other people have a different view of this topic.

Let's face it:
- The french words are Latin within extra steps
- English is just an Evolution of Lower German

As a French person speaking English and learning German, I realized that there are so many equal words in the three languages, it helps a lot to learn 😭🙏🏻

What we have to not forget is, France, England and Germany have a lot a common history (wedding, conquest, etc). Obviously our languages are similar. We're like cousins. Our bloods are mixed.

Engagement though is a false friend: das Engagement - commitment; the engagement- die Verlobung

And the coolest imo: the English ‘kaput’ and German ‘kaputt’ come from the French ‘capot’ (which incidentally doesn’t mean broken)
