Soul City Arts founder Mohammed Ali MBE gave us an insight into the reason behind “Eid In Kings Heath’ “In 2010 I was blessed to be invited to perform at The Streets Festival in Chicago with 20,000+ in a park and headline acts like Mos Def. It was organised by good friend and now collaborator Asad Jaffri. I was inspired to see a celebration of the Muslim faith done in such an inclusive way with so many people of all background and faith present. It was also brilliant in terms of artistic quality, and it was rare to see all of these things present at the same time. Unapologetic, confident, inclusive and real artistic excellence... I went away inspired from that experience and began my journey artistically directing festivals in places like Malaysia, Kenya, Pakistan, Kuwait, Australia and South Africa over the course of a decade. I wanted to bring a bit of that magic back home, so in a much more intimate space we delivered Eid in Kings Heath last year for the first time, in order to bring some of that unity to an an ultra-local setting. Kings Heath really needed it and I was troubled by the lack of engagement between communities. From the global festival platform to a a street-corner in my local High St, it was a great moment of communities coming together. I wanted to share a bit of that journey of how Eid in Kings Heath came about. “ We bring it back this year.
