This video made me realize I have no idea what breeds are double coated.

honest question bc I struggle with this one: GREAT PYRS! they are guardians and spend time outside, but they also can have a nightmare coat that pelts. Like, wtf am I supposed to do??? I'm in texas and the majority I see are pets that spend a lot of time outside filthy and get groomed once a year. if it's pelted in with half the yard, like, what choice do I have? even if it is a guardian outside. even if they client doesn't want a shave. I've worked miracles on compacted coats before, but theres a limit. I feel like I can't win on those appointments

I don’t have a problem with shaving double coated dogs if they keep up with maintenance in between. If they’re bringing them in once a year and I have to deal with that absolute RUG of a damaged coat? Nah dude that has to be so uncomfortable for the dog

I do what the client asks…. Except labs and pugs. The hair bothers me so bad.

Since you mentioned schnauzers, it's interesting that you don't usually hear people mention wire haired dogs in the discussion on shaving double coated dogs. The average pet owner is not going to hand strip a dog, nor will they be willing to pay a groomer to do it. So using clippers is the only way most schnauzers will ever have anything that resembles a breed standard groom!

And some are so impacted with mats that there’s no choice but to shave them

i always always tell them the risks before shaving double coated dogs. i REFUSE to shave huskies since i live in California. mostly because these huskies do live outside, and can risk sunburn 😅

I have a wall of literature on why we dont recommend it - then there's a disclaimer that's like, hey bro. its case by case.

Out of curiosity, at what point do you tell clients to consider comfort grooms? I have a 14 year old Sheltie and I’m kinda feel like I’m at that point with him, but would like to hear other people’s experience first. 💕

When my aussie gets old all bets are off, he gets whatever keeps him comfy. Same will be for all of my dogs.

Yesssss. Normalize doing what's best for the dogs and their/their owner's lifestyle.

They’re just going to go to the next person who will do it. The best we can do is educate and hope they make the right choice. Most dogs are double coated anyway like you mentioned.

Yep. Me too. I have two Peki clients that I’ve had to shave twice because they were in full coat and absolutely pelted. Now they’re kept at a manageable length and their coats came back in beautifully. I also shave so many spaniel breeds weekly.

People lose their minds like it’s killing the dog. I don’t do it unless there’s a medical reason because I don’t like doing it but I don’t judge groomers who do. I will side eye them if they don’t atleast try to educate the owner first.

My boss had to shave an Alaskan malamutes body (not legs or neck/face) because he was pelted matted. Slowly over time it’s grown back, there was no other option unfortunately

I do it. I explain the possible issues but I rather do it myself and know I do it compassionately and make that money. I also charge extra for shave downs I don't want to do 🤣

Lots of senior rough collies really benefit from being shaved, especially if they have a spay coat or thyroid issues. That janky coat that feels like straw doesn't help them regulate temperature, it just overheats them.

I live in ND. People drive from bum-f**k places and won’t/can’t make the trip more than once a year. So yeah I’m going to shave the rough collie. I did spend 4 hours brushing it the first few times, but I realized it wasn’t fair to the dog, she is 8-9 years old with deformed feet and has trouble standing

it's my job to educate and advocate but I'm not gonna say no. I personally prefer to do 1/2 for shaved double coats though so they atleast have a little sun protection because most of the ones we see are outside a lot.

I have a Scottie, he's wheaten, with a crazy undercoat, we tried handstripping, he hates it. No matter what, the end. We live at a barn, he now gets shaved short once or twice a year, for mine and his sanity and tbh, he's fine. His coat is still nice and coarse, I let him get crazy long bc I enjoy it, it hasn't affected his life in any way lol. He's too sensitive to stand and be handstripped regularly.
