You don’t need the lid for burgers or steaks. Wanna run it hot n fast. Set up two zones. Bank your coals on one side (hot) and nothing on the other (cool) side. That way you have an escape for your food.

that smoke is because you are smothering the fire too hot then you cover it makes the coal smoke up close the intake vent a little to drop the temp and open vent on top

The white smoke in this situation is fine. You have meat directly above coals dripping fat, and you’re obviously trying to melt thick cheese with the vents closed. A couple minutes of this on food that’s obviously done won’t hurt anything, and that cheese will have a deeper smoke flavor. Dark smoke would be bad, and the cheese would be covered in soot.
