Have you ever seen a swarm of honeybees up close? 🐝 This particular swarm was of Giant Asian Honeybees (Apis dorsata), gathered right outside my window. Growing up, I’d often see swarms at this same spot, sometimes even forming hives. It was a familiar sight back then, but not everyone in the neighborhood was comfortable with it. Eventually, people started using chemical repellents, which drove the bees away, thus ending the yearly visits. So, waking up to a massive swarm in this spot after so many years was a surprise! The neighbours were already planning to call a pest control service, but the swarm left before they arrived. Most swarms are just temporary, as they’re often the result of a disrupted colony moving to keep their queen safe while scout bees search for a new nesting site. Once they find a suitable place, the swarm relocates to start building a hive. It might seem intimidating, but there’s no need to worry. The honeybees are highly focused on protecting their queen (and their hive when they have one), so as long as they don’t feel threatened, they’re harmless to people nearby. The only time they’ll sting is if they sense danger to their hive or queen. Honeybees are so cool. Their complex structured hierarchy within a colony and how they function as a hive is so interesting to learn about (also see - the honeybee dance to locate a food source) ;) Couldn’t choose between colour and monochrome. Which ones do you like more? 🐝 #wildlife #wildlifelover #nature #bees #animallovers
