@mtn.alice: Running is an art of delayed gratification, years upon years of little steps taken each day. I'm pretty sure it was Courtney Dauwalter who said that running is like piling one grain of sand each day until ultimately you have a huge hill. This slow-going devotion is ultimately what makes running so incompatible with the fast-paced & fake culture of social media. Go watch @mak :) 's videos!!!
I’ve been running since I was 14 and I’m 36 now. I wax & wain w mileage, but I rarely race and have never done a marathon. It’s almost like people have forgotten you can run simply for enjoyment! It doesn’t have to be about the outfit or the race or the social media of it all. You and Mak have such great messaging!!!

This is super helpful as someone who has always wanted to be a runner but never could figure out how to

yes. this is the way. I casually ran and VERY slowly increased my distance over the span of 6 years before I committed to an Ultra.

I recently read that your muscle rebuild cycle is around 4-6 weeks, while your ligament cycle is closer to 3-6 months. You will injure yourself if you don’t take it slowly.

Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiisssssssss!! need to see more of this take. So many runners seem scared to say that running should be jumped into quickly as they seem to think that correlates with gate keeping running. Like everyone who enjoys running should run, but you also shouldn’t be hitting a marathon year one with no experience. Build up slowly!!

Such a fan of you and Mak, and y’all have some much more experience than me—but have to say, Runna has been so helpful for me. As someone with zero running experience, I started trying to up mileage way too quick, injured myself and then found Runna. Set it up as a beginner and then slowly built (10% max per week) and got me to my first marathon last year (4:05). Honestly (and Mak has touched on this) I do think the most dangerous part of Runna vs an actual coach is people’s egos making them set it up at a higher level than they are ready for.

I'm training for a 5k right now because I know I could run farther for sure, but I don't want to make myself hate running because I did too much too fast. I viewed strength training the same way. Why would I rush to reach the end when these things should be lifelong activities?

I love this advice. As someone who has run marathons in the past, and wanting to get back into running, just becaise I like how it felt, I appreciate the reminder.

Thank you. I’ve felt crazy watching this. I’ve been running (mid distance) since high school (2009!!!) and just this year I felt like I had the health, time, and endurance to go for a full marathon. Did half marathons for 3 years before feeling ready. It’s wild to see. And it’s absolutely why they are all getting hurt. Yes running is healing for the soul when you slowly build. I love being outside for hours discovering in this way

as someone who spent their entire first running year in the injury cycle (2023 was rough) and has finally figured out how to safely build volume, 100% yes!!!

lol I used Gemini AI for my first half and it didn’t go well. Now I just go on vibes upping mileage from 8-12 now etc. I’ll never be elite but it’s great exercise

I don't think you're wrong on any one point. I think running is too be enjoyed and when people do it and have a bad experience because of poor planning I get a little frustrated. but my opinion should be fully ignored.

Just go and run and run far when you feel like it. it’s not a complicated strategy.

Thank you, this is gratifying!! I’m doing couch to 5k VERY slow. Multiple repeats of runs. I don’t want to hurt myself and get derailed again!
