my husband's mother charged him 400 dollars of rent every month- when he found his first apartment she pulled out the envelope of all the money and they furnished it 😭

Boundaries aren’t abuse. Structure isn’t control. Learning responsibility isn’t oppression.

Mine is so our parents can be dependent on us kids. (I don’t live with them) but that’s how it’s always been.

Not true, some do it so you can start learning about paying bills and you become more financially responsible

Sorry, we charge our adult children $200 each a month. My husband & I are retired we can’t afford to pay for everything.

I don’t know your situation but helping parents pay bills while having a full Time job during a transitional period of your life is actually completely normal and I would never expect my dad to let me stay in his house for free knowing I make enough money to save and contribute to the place that I live in as well!

The psychology behind this is astounding! So that they remain in control over you.

I was charged $1,100 a month, $275 a week for my room, I still paid for my own groceries and I was left with little to nothing at the end. I have never and will never see that money or any other money from my mother - I’m so glad I got out

And some of us do it to teach our kids responsibility. We give it back to them with interest when they’re ready to move out.

My mom told me I never have to move out, I have everything at home for me, and that I’m not allowed to move out until I’m married. I’ve given her nearly 10k in the last 2 years. Can’t wait to secretly move out.

And some parents make you felt guilty by saying “why would you pay rent to someone else, you can pay rent here to help us out”. Like that’s not the point maam

My parents made a deal with us: if we are in school and living at home, we don’t have to pay for anything except for school. If we are just living there, we pay $300 a month for utilities, food, and rent total. They gave all of us a year to figure out what we wanted to do. I moved out immediately and my mom bought my first round of groceries, my older brother moved out after that year period and eventually moved back home and is paying rent at home and is about to move out again. Little brother hasn’t left yet and pays rent but he’s still trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life. I think it teaches us responsibility and that we can’t live somewhere for free as an adult

Do you one better: not only at 18 did I have to pay rent but I had to start buying my own food and make space for it in the family fridge. My mom swatted my hand for even touching her bag of chips, I had no phone for like a year and a half while in college without a car. It was ROUGH. And they wonder why we’re not that close.

My mom made me pay her every month even though I was chronically ill and pregnant. My younger brother never paid a dime but I had to or I had to leave. Left as soon as I could.

I paid rent to my parents and was working 3 jobs saving for my first place out. I finally got a job in my field and was able to afford living alone. It’s a mindset. You got this! Don’t let your parents control rob your independence. If anything find roommates, but have a clear financial goal/ savings and keep your head high.

I had to pay rent @ 16 years old when I got a job to save up for a car. I would never take my kids money.

my adult children have FT jobs. they pay their own insurance, cell phones, and $100 in rent per month. rent started after high school. if they didn't go to school, they were expected to work and pay rent. once they had cars, they paid insurance (both were 19). I paid for phones until they wanted an upgrade, then they were on their own. they both have saved money, 1 is PT school now. It's not always about a parent being selfish. it's about supporting your children while learning to adult

It is true though this happens, my husbands parents had us move in with them to help and then had us paying the entire 1800 while they paid 200 their excuse? My husband is married with 2 little girls, that means there’s 4 of us and 2 of them, but it still wasn’t even and they were taking everything from us and then having us borrow from them when we couldn’t support ourselves

Lost contact with her about 5months ago. And her health is fine and all she just refuses to work LOL

I still have a mortgage and living paycheck to paycheck… we had our kids super young. We provided a great childhood for our children… sacrifice our own need so they can have … full time students, no need to pay rent… but working adults.. $1000 a month for rent… that includes all expenses.. car insurance, phone and utilities and foods….
