I’m also grossed out by how many of my friends tell me how their therapists cancel last minute or show up late to sessions?? Talk about not creating a safe container. We have to be responsible with people’s fear of rejection and sense of not being valued. Showing up means being there not just physically but emotionally. Turning off or down your world, practicing mindfulness so you can be fully there as the clinician and not looking at the clock but looking at the emotions and the energy of the room and the person you’re sitting with. It’s about presence. True presence. For THEIR place. It’s not about YOU— it’s about them. Maybe you did go through something they have. So then why not pull from what you remember of how you were feeling when it happened and explore those possible feelings with your client.. “I imagine you’re feeling alone and self conscious after the rejection of ____” Instead of: “when my date didn’t text me back I felt the same.” When you bring too much of yourself in the room you change the space from theirs to yours.. and you never know the impact that disclosure can have on a person. They might not feel comfortable to share or even explore their feelings because you went through the same thing? I’m an anti- disclosure licensed therapist and it’s worked wonders for my clients. I was taught this way and deeply believe in it. But it doesn’t mean my clients don’t know me. It means I know them so much deeper. <3 I wrote this quickly and it might sound snappy— I’m just very passionate about this topic of leaving the clients space as THEIRS. It’s how I do it but it doesn’t mean it’s the only way.
