My Grandad. He used to be an executive for British Rail, and I’m actually the first generation of my family not to work on the railway. My parents usually had to do so much for my brother and sister because of their disabilities and when they had to go to hospital with them I was left a lot with my Grandfather. He’d take me up into the loft where he had this huge Hornby model railway set up of Conwy which was near where he lived. We’d play for hours before he’d put on a VHS of Thomas the Tank Engine and he’d cook me tea. It would only get better as every year at Christmas he’d take us all on a heritage train (Llangollen or similar) where we’d meet Santa. It was magical. After his wife died following 55 happy years of marriage, we got closer than ever in my teenage years. I got estranged with both my parents, but he was always there for me. Realised when I was hurting even before I knew I was hurting. Always a shoulder to cry on and a smile to brighten the day. We’d go on trips together, seeing the UK on the Northern Bell. Taking in the sights in luxury. Whatever happened we still always had something to talk about. Our mutual love of the railways. Jim, my wonderful loving Grandfather passed away two years ago. And although that means I’m alone now, I carry him with me all the time through my love of trains and the railway. Going to disused stations, heritage railways, massive terminus’s in city centres or anything in between, helps me feel close to the one father figure I got in this lifetime. That’s his legacy and I’ll never stop loving trains because of it.

Definitely a steady diet of Thomas the Tank Engine (which I still follow despite being 30), collecting trains, and even taking trips on board trains. Sure it’s been diesels mostly but I did get to go to an A Day Out with Thomas event at 8 (still consider that the best day of my life) and even got to go to the Snowdon Mountain Railway at 16. Hoping one day to go to more heritage railways like the Talyllyn

My first time I went to a toy shop and bought the Thomas rail roller, but I got bored, secondly I was with my little brother in 2018 seeing 172339, the livery is good in my opinion and made me love trains now

Same way as most: This tiny blue tank engine. Don’t watch anymore or play with the toys but still reminisce on the best time in my life, which was playing with him

As a kid I had a desperate desire to understand how real trains worked after hyperfixating on Thomas and friends, and eventually i discovered railway documentary’s on YouTube at the ripe age of 7. I’m 19 now and trains have become my lifelong passion and obsession. I wish to work on a railway for life.

I always loved TTTE but the first ever loco I was introduced too was gordon and when I found out what loco Gordon was based off was the flying Scotsman so a visit to the York railway museum and seeing it there really set me off then seeing it in steam at the bluebell railway in steam really got me into full action going to railways all away around the UK and now I've been able to volunteer at a miniture railway it's just only got better from here
