I agree that he's testing Luke out, but Luke failed the force section. Vader throws the first thing at him, realizes Luke did not finish his force training, and just keeps throwing stuff at him to drive the lesson home that this is an important part of Jedi training. Basically Vader realizes no one ever taught his kid how to play catch, lol

That “oooh” Vader lets out when Luke gets him in the shoulder has always stuck with me. Never have I heard “alright enough we’re done” spoken in just a noise 🤣

The storytelling in that fight and in all the OG fights is what the prequels are missing. The prequel fights have setpiece beats. The og fights have story beats.

This is why the OG duels are best. The prequel fights were better looking, but the fights are basically “Evenly matched until they’re not.” The OG, you got a real sense of the skill difference between them. Even the number of hands Vader uses to hold his saber is part of the storytelling.

That whole duel is a master class in fight choreography. Even without the dialogue, you would know exactly what they are thinking with each move.
