There wasn't a single name for pre-colonial Nigeria because it was not a unified nation but a region composed of many diverse kingdoms and ethnic groups, including the Benin Kingdom, the Hausa states, the Oyo Empire, and the Kanem-Bornu Empire. These different entities had distinct names, languages, and traditions before the British colonial administration established the name "Nigeria" for the combined territory. Examples of pre-colonial entities in the region of Nigeria: Kingdom of Benin: A powerful state located in present-day southern Nigeria. Hausa States: A collection of kingdoms in the north, including Daura, Kano, and Katsina. Oyo Empire: Another significant empire that gained control over large areas of the land. Kanem-Bornu Empire: An ancient empire that also held sway in parts of the region. Sokoto Caliphate: A later powerful entity in the north, organized into emirates.

My brother u asked a very good question and I will answer u the question as a Nigerian man... That time, nothing like Nigeria then, that time we are on regional state of our own, we have Biafra as a region that's igob people, we have oduduwa that's yoruba people, then we have housa people these was the regions we had then before that woman u just mentioned her name now came and joined us together with the hands of British people... Now look at us now, I understood that east African here, Uganda can communicate with 1 language, Kenyans can also, and so other east Africans, but IN Nigeria, we had sooooooooooooo many languages which we can't understand ourselves

Nigeria didnโt have one single name before 1897 โ instead, it was known by the names of its many kingdoms, empires, and colonial protectorates.

Nigeria never existed in 1897 as a country. The Northern protectorate region and Southern protectorate region were amalgamated unfortunately in 1914. This was done by Mr. (crazy) Lugard to enhance the British business and use resources of the wealthy southern region to govern the Northern region through indirect rule. The name NIGERIA formed by his girlfriend stuck till today.
