They're irreplaceable when working with electric motors and their wiring

That's why you between ground. Any of them damaged are likely contact the ground or housing.

I used to work for Eaton (Westinghouse/cutler hammer/etc) in the Asheville plant as a quality inspector for LVA Switchgear, medium voltage drive / MV Ampgard - and phase to phase clearance was only 1” across buss. I don’t get why people meggers are magic 😂

In what instances would you use the lower voltages? I’ve never used a megger but from what I understand a higher voltage will help detect any potential faults. Any chance you would be able to show us what too look for when testing a 240v 480v 3 phase motor?

When I worked with electricians who worked on fueling equipment (gas stations, generators, etc), we found meggers were basically useless unless there was water inside the raceway just like what you’re saying. Most of the journeyman used continuity tests.

isnt it true that its better to load a circuit while testing ? thats what i was told megger was doing essentially

Well this is true for an instant test, not as accurate unless practically touching as you demonstrated. For the average sparky yeah it’s not much help vs just ohm’ing it out. My for greenlee for example I can test for 30 seconds or for 10 minutes. This gives me the DAR & PI results. If there is poor insulation detected I use the company’s Megger CFL535G to help pinpoint the distance to the fault. But day to day we don’t carry around $7k worth of testers 😂

I know it's not the recommended standard but I have detected deteriorated wiring with a 5kv meg test from the suspect conductor to the equipment frame, not to another conductor though, that I can recall anyway.

worked industrial maintenance for a long time. never megged anything except motor windings. watched our main sub get megged but that was much much higher voltage.

I’ve only ever used a meager for MI cable for in concrete heating. Does MI cable make a difference?

So was just able to find this in the real world!!! But I think it's because the raceway was EMT

As a tool to detect installation issues on low voltage wiring, insulation resistance testing has more limited utility, but there are reasons both NFPA 70B and NETA MTS recommend the testing. I assume you know that, but are only referring to this one scenario in the video.

So what you’re saying is Meg testing is essentially useless…

I feel like you’ve had to slowly explain this to us with crayons before 🤔 maybe 7 more times and we’ll get it. 🤭

I found this out by accident once. We damaged some wire pulling it in. You could clearly see copper. I wanted to test it anyway to show the apprentice it would fail. It passed and I looked like a moron. 😂 oh well, you live and you learn.

I'm sorry.I'm really dumb and I always thought meggers will show you bad insulation, or i'm really dumb and completely misunderstood your video
