The height and shape of a smoke plume over a fire can tell you more than the flames themselves. Even a seemingly small fire can reveal its strength just by the way its smoke behaves. A tall, rising plume signals intense heat. Strong convection carries the smoke kilometers into the sky. Low, creeping smoke usually means a weak or smoldering fire. The shape of the plume is also telling. A straight vertical column indicates calm wind and a fire fueled mostly by its own heat. A tilted plume shows strong winds, pushing the fire to spread faster. When the smoke forms a mushroom-shaped cloud, it can be a pyrocumulus—or in extreme cases, a pyrocumulonimbus—where the fire is powerful enough to create its own weather. The height of the smoke also affects how far pollutants travel. High plumes can carry smoke hundreds of kilometers, while low smoke stays near the fire, creating dense haze and health hazards. Firefighters and aerial crews often read the smoke first. It shows the fire’s intensity, wind direction, and potential growth. Sometimes, watching the smoke tells you more than any instrument. #fire #smoke #wildfire #pyrocumulus #pyrocumulonimbus
