![Education leaders are calling for GCSE students to no longer have to study Maths and English if they fail. This year, the number of resits taken reached an all-time high. Nearly a quarter of all exam entries were resits, which is a 14% increase from last year. Currently, it is compulsory for full time students on a 16-19 programme to continue studying Maths and English if they have not achieved a grade 4 or above. Education leaders say the Government’s resit policy is “not fit for purpose” and have called for it to be scrapped. Jill Duffy, chief executive of OCR exam board, said “Less than a fifth of resitting students achieved the grade 4 they need to break out of the resit cycle” calling it a “resit crisis”.
