I think you’re right. Everyone I’ve spoken to in real life, agrees that are romantic relationship between Nina and Tenma is heavily implied to be coming in the future since there were so many context clues scattered throughout the story. Urasawa is known for ambiguous open endings, so as much as a romance could be implied in “MONSTER”, it was. I do think Nina‘s romantic feelings are obvious by the end of “MONSTER”. Tenma, on the other hand is perhaps less obvious about those feelings, if they exist, but there is no question that his life is in intertwined with Nina‘s from that point on. From there, it’s really only a matter of time before they fall in love. He has a very poignant and intimate relationship with Nina, where he even questions what he’d do without her in his life. They’re intellectual equals, partners, and they are perhaps the only people able to understand each other due to shared trauma.
