I love this so much. My full name is Tenisyn, I went by “Teni” as a kid/teen so much that it’s what got printed on my HS diploma. My mom said that was never what she intended for me to HAVE to go by, and it snapped me out of it. I can take up an extra syllable. I love my unique name now 🥺🤍

Omg this made me tear up!! I’m going to be teaching HS English this year, and as a teacher with a long and “hard to pronounce” first and last name, I’m going to order a copy of Chrysanthemum to keep on my desk. I loved it so much as a kid and can’t believe I haven’t thought of it in so long!

Chrysanthemum was a favorite book for me but reading this now cemented it's purpose in my head as an adult now. I often let people pronounce my name however they want because I dont like drawing extra attention to it by correcting them. but its worth correcting them.

This is such a beautiful story!! Thank you for sharing!! I too grew up with a complicated name. My dad is Icelandic. He gave me a beautiful Icelandic name. Brynja. Pronounced Bryn-ya, it meant warrior in armour in old Norse. I too hated the shame and embarrassment of my name when teachers would try to figure out how to pronounce it. My dad did not raise me (not his choice) and I had no connection to this name that I so hated. I started going by Thorn in middle school and officially changed it to that when I was an adult. Now my dad and I are close and he's the only one I allow to call me by my old name :)
