@sophiemorrisofficial: What do you think of this marketing tactic on Nestle’s KitKat? If you saw this, would you perceive the messaging to mean that KitKat’s will ‘help get your kids into school’? I think it’s very reasonable to assume that’s what it’s saying! What it actually is referring to is something you’d need to scan the QR code on the pack to learn about (how many people would actually do this?!), which is their initiative aimed to combat child labour in cocoa farming. They do this through an Income Accelerator Program in cocoa farming communities which incentivizes school enrollment for children aged 6-16 through cash payments, alongside other practices. However this has received a lot of criticism partly because despite the program, a significant number of children, estimated between 300,000 and one million, are still involved in cocoa farming and child labor persists within Nestle’s supply chain. It’s also been suggested that Nestlé is using its community development programs as a way to improve its public image without making substantial changes to its supply chain practices. For me it looks very much like a PR campaign and a deflection from addressing the root causes of child labour in cocoa farming.
