I think we are also treating US politics like the president is an emperor. Congress is supposed to be the most poweful branch, and they have spent most of my life just abdicating responsibilities and power to the court and executive. No wonder it feels like finding the next president is the thing everything rests on

Right now I'm laser focused on the midterms. The Newsom push right now is probably being driven by some marketing strategy of Newsom's. It's also Hella premature. What we need to do for the midterms is avoid trashing the democratic party in general or democratic politicians individually. There's a time for holding democrats "accountable" and this is NOT it.

I think a lot of people are feeling so hopeless right now and are willing to turn to the first person who seeks to be effectively standing up to the administration. Right now a lot on the left are feeling dejected by the national party who don't seem to be taking the fascist turn very seriously. Newsom's rise to many people probably does feel like the only possible solution to stopping Trump's fascist reign and I think that's causing part of the craze right now. On the flipside, I think progressives are attacking him because he's gonna likely he the biggest threat to whoever their potential 2028 candidate will be.

It’s more extreme with Trump, but the celebrity/parasocial aspect has played a role in the careers of Obama, W Bush, Bill Clinton, and Reagan in my lifetime. And of course, Boomers were still worshipping JFK when I was a kid.

I’ve said for years I don’t want newsom winning the nomination because I think the overall country’s disdain for California will be insurmountable. That being said, I wish we could all just agree he’s actually stepping up and doing something when no one else is and encouraging him with our support shows other politicians what we want to be seeing from them.

I don't hear most people say he should run for president, but I hear "how can you support Newsom for president." People don't start running until like March 2027. I like that he's taken some actions to counter Texas republicans and support Latinos. I don't want him as president.

Dems need to focus on their jobs if they’re currently in an elected seat. If they are preoccupied with running for the presidency 3 years out and the GOP gets something through at their level on their watch, it will come back to bite them. Newsom will be attacked as not doing his job and not being a team player in 28.

I don't vote for a candidate to identify with them, I vote for a candidate to get as many of the things I want done that they can get done. This team sports mentality is really corrosive to politics when it becomes about what amounts to Fandom or fantasy football.
