Thanks for reminding me of the reasoning behind the varieties - “proper” voice writing. And especially thanks for calling them a type of tritone sub. That’s what originally unlocked my understanding of them.

Augmented 6th often chord function as a tool to modulate from keys not closely related. In the key of Db the V7 chord (Ab7) can also be spelled as an Aug 6 chord in C to “smoothly” modulate from Db to C (5 flats to 0 flats or sharps) 😁
