@kimberlycfimbres: I’m sure this has something to do with my upbringing and childhood money traumas. This could also be because I am a planner that is being responsible before bringing in a child into this world!? We also have so many goals that we want to reach before parenthood enters the chat. However, HUGE caveat is that I’m 31… 😅🥲😭😫❤️ #zerobasedbudgeting #financialliteracy #financialfreedom #paychecktopaycheck #emergencyfund

I agree. Our current lifestyle would go down if we have a kid, I’m not willing to take that risk

As someone who is very goal & money driven I had to stop & realize that i’ll probably never be happy financially because the more you make the more you chase… lol we kept setting financial goals & had to stop & ask ourselves are we really just waiting to get OLD!? Especially when we know we bring in more than most FAMILIES do these days!! I feel like our generation tries to over plan & that’s great but if you’re not struggling financially you’ll be fine. I just think about my body as a women & I do not want to be popping out my first child mid 30’s because I tried to plan my whole life out. The control freak in me had to really sit & realize we’re truly in such a good place! Our goals are happening regardless because we’ll get them done!!! ✨

We got out of debt before we could have any kids because I didn’t want to give them the scarcity mindset

You’re never going to feel like you have enough money for a child. Maybe at 40

250-300k gross would be a good target if both people are working and you have normal debt levels in HCOL. At the end of the day you have a biological clock though. You will be motivated to make more once baby is here. Sounds like you are responsible, you will be a good mom. Making sure you can actually take care of the kids without compromising your retirement and savings. It’s tough

childcare is very expensive but my mindset is that it is not forever, as soon as they reach school age i’m going to be getting a $2000/mo pay raise 😂 i wouldn’t wait TOTALLY until you’re 100% ready, you’ll make it work and then you’ll have a GREAT joy in your life!

You’re not wrong. If you maintain your current lifestyle, you’ll need to also increase your income to afford food, clothing, utilities, college savings, extracurriculars, etc for each kid

As a mom of a 1 year old I waited until I bought a house to start trying and wish I didn’t wait that long. Babies aren’t actually that expensive but childcare is expensive so it depends on what kind of childcare your baby will need.

We reached our money goals. Then, after accomplishing those goals, we got hit with the need to do IVF. You just never know what life will throw at you. So we ended up dealing with debt anyways.

As someone who struggled with infertility, miscarriage & infant loss 💔 I would say I had this mindset prior but don’t wait too long because although I don’t wish my journey on ANYONE - it’s not always “I’ll get pregnant right away” either & I don’t think that’s talked about enough 💯

Ok we are a lot alike. We paid off 126k of student loan debt before we started trying. I don’t regret it because it allowed us to bring her into the world without scarcity. HOWEVER, we then struggled with unexplained infertility and I wish we would have started sooner. But at the same time you could get pregnant on the first try so it’s hard to find the balance! What if you set a savings goal instead of an income goal? Like a safety net? I’ll sum it up with being a mom is my biggest joy and my husband and I often say we can’t believe we waited so long (I was 31 when we had her)

San Diego? Over 300k to have the upper middle class lifestyle portrayed in American media (nice 4 bedroom house in a “good” school district, two newish cars, weekly babysitter and date night, 2-3 vacations per year, new clothes, furnishings, random shopping at Target, frequent takeout etc.). Honestly, it might be more. Over 500k if you have 2-3 kids.

knowing i’ll be a good mom without having to prove it constantly to the child has helped me a lot with this decision ❣️also being ready is a decision not a feeling

The fact that you are going into the decision with so much thought 👏🏼👏🏼 As someone with an almost 3 year old, I would recommend that before having kids, your main focus be 1) building a healthy emergency fun and 2) contribute as much as you can to your 401k. It sounds like monthly cash flow isn’t a huge concern for you, but having the safety net is priceless with a young child. You can always make more money, but you can’t get the time back on your retirement growth.

I recently found out my sister has a condition that causes premature menopause (like as early as late 20s), got tested and I have the same. I say this to share - at least get some genetic and egg reserve level testing done if you are deciding to delay (if you know you do really want them). I think waiting until you are ready will always be the way to go though 🥰 however that looks for you.

Most ppl will never have as much money as they want to to have kids. Family houses cost a million dollars. You have to make a significant amount to feel comfortable

My husband and I are the same way! Too many people who complain about money tell us they’re trying for a second or third. They go on and on about childcare costs, but keep TRYING and having more. and they tell us we’re overthinking it. It would be rude for me to tell them they’re underthinking it, so I keep to myself about it lol. You guys know what will work for you and peace of mind is PRICELESS

This!!! But also test your (and your partners) fertility now to help give peace of mind. If you do need to do IVF you want to be going into that as young as possible. Or plan financially for that as well.
