Hot take- I hate pre-distressed clothing. Buying distressed vintage is not the same as buying something that’s manufactured to look distressed! There is a difference! Agree with your point though!

Yes! Also, as a 64 year old, I’m trying really hard to appreciate my wrinkles and gray hair as patina. Appreciating it in clothing has been most helpful.

There’s a section on patina in the book Status and Culture, by W David Marx. It talks about patina being a signifier of the old money class. A worn in Rolex, and handed down barn coat, repaired hand-made loafers and old sports cars. All things that are exclusive to time and being in the know. It’s a line separating new money, people buying distressed clothing, and the wealthy class, who can have the authentic version of these products.

Patina happens to brass steel and painted things. That’s worn. Worn because you love it. It’s the first item you grab. It becomes an extension of you. The opposite of fashion and trends. Timeless. You wear it because you don’t care what others think or if it current. The definition of cool.
