“Just bowing with their other hand” is an insane understatement. Bowing is about 85% of the difficulty of playing a string instrument.

As an ex-musician - do we get to keep the extra fold?

What about woodwinds? We use both hands pretty evenly but we don’t read music like a pianist would.

So fun fact, when I'm teaching a student a piano lesson and they also play, say, cello, if they're having trouble recalling a note, I'll say, "switch over to your Cello Brain", and like magic their eyes light up and they can instantly recall the note.

Does it hold true over other instruments though? Woodwinds/percussion should look like pianists and brass should look more like a violinist.

i know everyone's pressed about the "just bowing" but as a violinist, i mostly use my wrist and elbow on my bowing hand rather than my fingers, so that makes sense. poor choice of words, but he's not wrong lol

I play both. When I play the violin and read music, I know what the name of each note is. When I play the piano, I can’t tell you what note I’m playing. It’s weird

I will always be thankful to have learned piano. It shaped my entire relationship with making music and gavee abilities I'm still discovering after 40yrs.

As a former trombonist, I can confirm this brain is totally smooth, no bumps or lumps.

Have you ever looked at an organist and/or drummer? They require intense eye/hand/foot coordination and I'm curious how that manifests.

This really impressive information. I understood the concept of these folds in the brain. But the fact that it is literally the same spot, and is mirrored with a pianist is amazing.

So if this is related to the motor use of your fingers…I wonder if this shows up for individuals who use sign language?

Should include Guitarists… but branch it out to not just guitar but also bass guitar and maybe flamenco guitarists cuz they use both hands more so than regular guitarists who use a pick.

Not string players also use fine motor skills in our right hands, too. Bowing is just as complicated as the left hand.

"They're just bowing with their right hand." Harvard scientists think they are musical experts too. 😂😂😂😂
