@abanaturally: 4 Things to remember when your kids aren’t following directions, especially in unsafe situations 1️⃣ Stay Calm. I know…it’s easier said than done. But kids pick up on our energy. If we respond with frustration or urgency, we may accidentally reinforce their behavior. Instead, staying steady models how to handle stressful moments. 2️⃣ State Expectations Clearly—Then Act. Use a neutral tone to state what needs to happen. If they don’t follow through, repeat it once, then calmly step in with a physical prompt to guide them away from the unsafe situation. 3️⃣ Keep It Moving. Don’t linger or wait for more resistance. Shift gears, redirect them to a new activity or get them engaged elsewhere. 4️⃣ Catch Them Meeting Expectations. Just as quickly as you corrected them, notice and reinforce when they follow through. That’s how the real learning happens! And what will I do differently next time? Let Grace know my expectations BEFORE we throw coins in the fountain. All we can do is learn from these moments and do better next time. ➡️ PS: Over 1,700 parents inside my Practical Parenting course are having calmer days and actually enjoying parenting again. If you want to learn how to do this step by step, DM me READY and I’ll send you the info. Already in the course? Don’t miss the brand new expanded module on consequences…and yes, I break this down for older kids as well. #bcba #appliedbehavioranalysis #behavior #parenting #parentsoftiktok
