@alexatmedicinebird: A conversation about how white people perpetuate violence against Native people in 2025. Trigger warning to my Native friends. #montana #indginousart #gallerylife
I went to school in Riverside, CA. We played a Christian (yt ppl) school in football. As soon as we got off the bus they yelled hella racist remarks. We were an all Native Football team and we did had mix natives too. Our head Coach was white. We just played football and kept it professional.

Totally agree. As a Native who’s mostly lived off the rez, I’ve had people tell me “you’re not like them” and then unload every stereotype about Natives. I stop them and remind them I am Native, that what they’re saying is offensive, and then they backtrack. I’ve gotten good at either shifting the topic or using it as a chance to educate. The most racist woman I ever met was from Montana too — she repeatedly spouted ignorant racism without a filter, argued against educated points, and no matter what I said, she wouldn’t back off. I finally left the table, and some words were exchanged. The racism is very real, and I really appreciate that you’re speaking from lived experience and genuine respect for Native people, instead of just repeating what outsiders say.

I’m the lone white guy at my job. Everyone else is native. The number of times I’ve had to tell white people their comments were inappropriate is off the charts.

I grew up on the Blackfeet reservation and the first time my (white, grew up in Ronan) partner came to visit me there, his coworkers were worried for him 😂 i lived a pretty normal life in Browning but the rumors do make me feel like a badass when I choose to laugh at them.

I’m an Apache from Arizona and recently travelled through Montana and it was absolute HELL, I swear every yt person felt like a literal demon! It was so shocking to me and I couldn’t wait to get back home where everyone is nice 😭

It’s just their ancestors guilt coming through and they are projecting it to justify their own violence and racism. Further creating division and adversity. While benefiting from our population through trying to commercialize our culture like powwows and the tourism that comes with outsiders being curious.

I’m white & grew up on a reservation & I get asked about this stereotype ALL the time now that I’m in predominantly white communities for the first time. When I moved near reservations in Arizona, alllll the white people warned me to stay off the reservations FOR THIS SAME REASON. It blows my mind— I feel safer on reservations than I do in suburbs 😩

I’m from Ronan and it was the racist towns we weren’t allowed by ourselves in. I wasn’t allowed alone at travel games in Columbia Falls and Whitefish because their fans were so violent towards our fans :)

My siblings live in Montana. Visited them the first time last year. When I was searching for an Airbnb I was asking about what areas to stay and they steered me away from areas that HATE us for my safety. The only danger comes from yt people towards poc.

This reminds me of a 2022 case - when an Indigenous woman named Jessie Gardipee was murdered in front of her toddlers in Billings, MT. The killer, Shyrone Wolf Back, claimed “self-defense” and authorities accepted it. He was released and killed Bryten Olson, a white teen, just two years later. Jessie’s death wasn’t taken seriously because she was Indigenous. Too often, the justice system decides whether a victim “matters” based on stereotypes about their lifestyle. In MT even the police and courts will dismiss an Indigenous person’s murder because, for them, it's not worth pursuing.

I don’t “look” native to some people that have felt comfortable saying stuff like this to me. Makes me feel those conversations are comfortably happening once we’re out of sight.

My old best friend said her husband told her she couldn’t stop at the reservation store even though she needed gas etc. she drove by it all the time and needless to say we’re not friends anymore. And you are 100% correct Billings is the worse!!!

I have my own small remodeling business in Havre, MT. It can be challenging. I often wonder how many quotes of mine were turned down because im native. Also I dont speak out in fear of losing more business.

Is the racism thinly veiled if they are explicitly saying these things out in about around town or in schools?
