Gohan died in the rain fighting for the future, and he succeeded. Even after his death, Trunks did what he set out to. he created a timeline where he got to grow up and he the scholar he always wanted to be.

Future Gohan has one of the most tragic deaths in the anime, one of the only in the show that I actually cried to. This edit is so goooood I'm crying again 🥺 (Id like to think, that future Gohan found Goku on the other side, and Goku showered his son in praise, and held him as he cried. Because I know this hurt Gohan, so much...)
