I think the shows are all examples of adolescent sublimation! Grandiose fantasy is normal and their true reality is hard to deal with so a fantasy where both can be true - I’m a normal girl but also a pop star just no one knows it. Is a healthy compromise formation between the wish and their reality . I wanted to write a paper on this last year. Lol

All these shows made me feel valid because from a very young age I had to hide who I was from basically every adult (born gay in a muslim family) gathering the courage to tell any of my friends at school felt like when these protagonists told their friends after so many seasons 💜

this x100 when you actually do have a real secret that you’re keeping from your parents. in my case, my gender & sexuality were kept as a secret from my parents (and truly from me until a few years ago) so shows like this that had these teenagers with these huge secrets that no one can know was a big comfort for me growing up. it made me feel less scared and alone.
