@crazycatboy13: Connective tissue disorders such as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and its comorbidities, are more common in trans people. They often affect someone’s mobility and may cause them to need a mobility aid (which is what I see most people online getting mad about). There are 13 types of Ehlers Danlos syndrome, and many other similar disorders that may be more common in trans people. Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) is one, and likely more connective tissue disorders, but there isn’t enough research to say for sure. Some examples of others are Marfan’s Syndrome, Loeys-Dietz Syndrome, and Osteogenesis Imperfecta. ID: “Research indicates that up to 17% of people with EDS identify as transgender or gender diverse, compared to about 1.3% in the general U.S. population.” Sources: PMID: 39850941, PMID: 37730651, PMID: 36600979, PMID: 40145613, PMID: 35211037, PMID: 35185636, 32770077, 29427119, 38799613, PMID: 39301475, 37504295 TRANSCRIPT: “**this is just one reason of many” “*As well as other disorders, especially connective tissue disorders. EDS is just a pretty common one” (when he said “Trans people are much more likely to have a genetic disorder called Ehlers danlos syndrome”) “*specifically more trans people” (correction for when neilan said “that might be why you’re seeing so many more people with disabilities recently)

I think for autism and gender it partially has to do with not understanding what gender actually is- idk how to explain it but I read a brief introduction to feminist philosophy and at one point the author goes through and tries to define being a woman and it’s actually pretty difficult. I also think it’s like, you’re told “girls do this boys do that” and as an autistic person I always need to know why, and there’s not a good answer other than “because they’re girls and because they’re boys”

this is just a theory as an autistic individual, but my guess is because our review on the identity and gender spectrum is so so much more than just basing off what people have told us

I wrote papers on this! a common theory is that autistic people often either don't understand or don't care to conform to made up constructs like gender! they're social cues and rules that we either don't naturally tend to follow not fit in, or don't feel obligated to! - an Autistic Nonbinary masters student

I wonder why ehlers danlos syndrome seems to be a lot more common than Marfan syndrome when they’re pretty closely related

I don’t think autistic people are more likely to *be* trans I just think they’re more likely to do something about it and less likely to be stealth. We’re less encumbered by social expectation.

I think the link between autism and neurodivergency and being transgender has a lot to do about being able to have more abstract perspectives about gender.

autistic people are partially more likely to be trans cause theyre more likely to not follow the (gender) norms expected of them. theyre more likely to question gender as a construct, and then to also identify differently. this is why being nonbinary is so much more common in autistic folk.

Also not to mention kids that are either queer, neroudivergent, poc, or disabled have a higher chance of facing adverse childhood events or trauma and that risk increases if someone falls into multiple of these categories and adverse childhood events or trauma can lead to the development of other physical, mental health problems, and can worsen already existing health problems

I also think some ppl with visible disabilities are more comfortable expressing individuality bc they already stand out.

I think having certain disabilities can be already isolating so they'll be more likely to explore their gender identity as they'll either have time to recognise feelings. that or they are already isolated so are more likely to come out and be open about themselves

Also, when doctors generaly don't listen to you (saying everything, including your identity, is "all in your head") It's more likely for them to ignore something until It becomes a long term health issue

if you're already introspective enough to realise your gender and advocate for yourself then you're probably more likely to notice disabilities too

It’s almost like gender is a set of arbitrary social rules… something that we Autistic folks purportedly struggle to follow. (From someone who has hEDS and is Autistic and is Trans who also has blue hair)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve heard that majority of people with ASD are more likely to fall under the trans umbrella due to constantly feeling out of place in general, I.e feeling out of place when specified as their gender due to gender norms not really fitting them

Also, for the dyed hair and piercings, a lot of disabled people, especially younger disabled people, will adopt a more creative/alternative style because it’s something they can control when their health is so tumultuous. And we can believe that people are looking at the bright hair or unusual clothes instead of the young person using a mobility aid
