@neilinvests: Replying to @cnm the thing with pensions is that they are just so tax efficient. This is not investment advice. When investing, your capital is at risk. Forecasts are not indicative of future performance. Terms and fees may apply.
if you're 19 u won't ever see Ur pension. it'll be up to about 80 by you're retirement age

Don’t opt out of your pension as you are opting out of free money… invest on top if you can

My work place pension is absolutely shocking as a plumber it’s going to be worth 80-90k predicted the time I retire which is very poor. If I invest that money into stocks and shares it should be worth over a million

Pension is best thing. I get 40% relief so my s+s must make 40% before it even matches my pension. I’m not anti stocks and shares. Have an account with trading 212 and wealthify but none will match my pension.

Great advice. So many only promote the market and talk massive gains rather than the whole picture of sensible long term investment.

I have recently gone self employed, similar situation to yours. Please can we have a bit more info on self employed pension and making the most of gov benefits. I topped up my old workplace pension last year but I think may have been the wrong move..

Shall I tell you something. Your 19 Do both. Think about it. You can easily get 100 at least per month. Even before 30 you will ahead of the game.

Losing out on employer contributions is nuts. You would never catch up with money lost in an isa. I wish I had that perk a lot sooner. Add salary sacrifice if available.

My son is 20 and self employed so has no employer contributions if he did take out a personal pension ,so I thought to use his isa allowance for tax free returns into various stocks &shares was the best alternative

I know the great benefits of pensions, but I just don’t trust the government they can’t help themselves but raid it and change the rules. At least with the ISA because less people have them it’s less of a cash cow for the thieves in Whitehall. Also with an ISA you have better liquidity. I can’t see people under 40 seeing their private pension until 65+

Honestly companies make managing your pension so difficult and some of the fees are so expensive. Still agree with alongside a pension to maximise the company match and the tax efficiency. To the commentor though there are options to self invest within the company pension wrapper if they are able to unpick how to do it …
